D ... for Decisions

The New Year has begun, and according to those of you who have been in touch, 2008 is filled with many plans and great expectations. Some of you are feeling invigorated, raring to get your teeth into the challenges you’ve set yourselves. Others are feeling overwhelmed as they face the future. Whether tired or wired, ensure that the decisions you make reflect your values and support you on your journey.

So, begin the New Year with D ... for decisions!

Reflect on some of your recent decisions. Think about the impact they have had on your life, including business and relationships.

Anecdote: on New Year’s Eve my husband and I went to a party at the B & B where we were staying over the holidays. Too wired to go to bed after the festivities, I went into the kitchen – where there was already a 3-person clean-up brigade beavering away - and asked if I could help. “Please do!” was the response, to which I grabbed a tea towel and got to work. This was perhaps the best part of the party. My conscious decision to do what I enjoy – supporting and engaging with others – led to satisfying several of my needs and values. I engaged with some delightful people. Two of them have since purchased my book, Body Language for Dummies . To buy your copy, click here. Another wants to explore how Kuhnke Communication can help her business. In addition, our hosts – Peter and Rick - were thrilled to see their kitchen clean and tidy. One decision, 3 positive outcomes.

Tips for Decision Making
BulletBase your decisions on your values. By staying true to what matters to you, you stay true to yourself.
BulletConsider the impact of your decisions. If you think them through carefully, paying attention to both your heart and your head, you’ll make the right choice.
BulletBe pro-active. Make a decision. Relying on others to make decisions for you can lead to poor choices, frustration and unhappiness.

Remember: Unless there is a medical reason that renders you incapable of making your own decisions, you hold the controls. You are responsible for every decision you make. The good, the bad, and the unbelievable.

Try This: Decide to do things differently. If you find yourself making decisions that are self-destructive – and, haven’t we all? – change your course. Decide to nurture yourself. You’d do the same for a friend.

Finally: Very few decisions are irreversible. If you make one that has a negative impact, learn the lesson. The next time you have a decision to make, go for the one that reflects you at your best.

Ciao for now
