B is for ... Breathing :
The days are growing shorter. The air is getting colder. All around us, nature is slowing down, conserving energy for the winter months ahead. It is in rhythm with this stage of the year to draw in to oneself, and it is nourishing and comforting to do so.
As you draw in, reflect upon your breathing. Proper breathing is the foundation for a strong voice. If you want to be heard, if you want to make a vocal impact, if you want to be taken seriously, your breathing must be properly placed and well supported.
In the chill of November, it is all too easy to hunch our shoulders and bow our heads. Bodies tense and fold in on themselves. Moods sour. Central heating and icy air dry our throats and cause our noses to run. Colds are a constant threat. Is it any wonder that proper breathing can be a challenge?
It is said that 3 weeks of concentrated effort can change an action. If you focus on your breathing for the next 21 days, by the New Year you will feel centred, calm, and concentrated. Your voice will be heard above the crowd, people will pay attention when you speak, and you’ll demonstrate strength and authority. Not a bad way to start the New Year!
Remember: Proper breathing requires that your abdominal muscles expand and contract like bellows, drawing in and releasing the air. Your chest remains calm.
Tip: Place one hand on your stomach and the other on your upper chest to make sure the muscles are working properly.
Try This: Inhale quickly and exhale on a long, slow breath. Then, reverse the action by inhaling slowly and exhaling quickly. What differences do you notice? Email us now, and we will share your insights on the news page of our website and in the December newsletter.
A final Thought: When you are breathing correctly, your body is relaxed, your brain is alert, and your voice is confident and clear, providing others with a feeling of much needed warmth at this frosty time of year.
Ciao for now
